Our Story
It began with two orphaned elephants
It began with two orphaned elephants — and a belief that understanding, not dominance, is the foundation of every true connection.
In Zimbabwe, Rory Hensman grew up with a deep affinity for animals. In 1988, that instinct became a calling when he rescued two young elephants, Jumbo and Miss Ellie. What followed was not training in the traditional sense, but a quiet, patient journey of trust. Alongside his wife, Lindie, Rory developed a respectful, intuitive approach — one that recognised elephants as intelligent, emotional beings with their own stories to tell.
Their work was never just about elephants. It was about listening, learning, and treating these remarkable animals with dignity.

In 2002, they relocated to South Africa, continuing their work with rescued elephants and sharing their philosophy with others. It was here that André Kotze, and later, Jack Brotherton, joined their journey, gaining first-hand experience in the quiet, patient approach that defines a true connection with elephants.
By 2005, that shared vision became Elephant Whispers — a safe haven for elephants in need, and a place where people could experience something deeper than observation. Here, connection is real. Learning is personal. And respect is mutual.

The elephants remain at the heart of everything. Each one carries a past, a personality, and a presence that cannot be replicated.
Rory passed away in 2013, but what he began did not end. Through Lindie's ongoing connection and the continued dedication of those he inspired, his legacy lives on — in every interaction, every moment of trust, and every life changed by these extraordinary animals.
Because in the end, this story has never belonged to people alone.
It belongs just as much to the elephants.
