Meet the five gentle giants of Elephant Whispers

Every elephant here has a story.

Spend a little time with them and you'll quickly discover that no two are the same. Each of our five elephants has their own personality, their own quirks, their own friendships, and their own place within the herd — and within the hearts of the team at Elephant Whispers who care for them every day.

When we asked our Elephant Handlers to help write these profiles, something lovely happened. Although each handler spoke from their own experiences, many of their observations were strikingly similar. It's a wonderful reminder of how well they know these elephants — and how clearly each elephant's individual character shines through.

So take a moment to meet them. You might find one you connect with.

These are just short introductions, but if you'd like to get to know them better, you can visit the Adoption Page where their full stories await.

Tembo

Male40 Years3.7m±7.5 tons

At around 7.5 tons, Tembo is impossible to miss.

With his magnificent tusks and calm, confident presence, he is the natural leader of the herd. Yet for all his impressive size, Tembo carries himself with remarkable gentleness — especially when it comes to the people he knows well.

He has a habit of greeting familiar faces with an enthusiastic trunk hug. For those meeting him for the first time, it can be both heart-warming and slightly overwhelming — after all, it's not every day a giant elephant decides to say hello quite so personally.

His name comes from Swahili, where 'Tembo' means elephant — a wonderfully fitting name for such a classic and unforgettable character.

Ziziphus

Male27 Years3.2m>5 tons

Ziziphus — or Zizi, as he's often called — is easy to recognise.

His forehead has a distinctive shape that makes him stand out instantly among the bulls. But it's not only his appearance that sets him apart. Zizi carries himself with a calm, slightly aloof confidence, as if quietly observing everything around him.

Yet give him the chance for a mud bath, and a different side appears.

Mud, water, and a little space to play are all it takes for Zizi's carefree personality to shine through. In those moments, the quiet observer becomes the enthusiastic participant.

In his own steady way, Zizi reminds us that true strength is often subtle.

Andile

Female27 Years2.6m<4 tons

If there's food nearby, chances are Andile will find it.

This beautiful young elephant has a wonderfully healthy appetite — even by elephant standards. Curious, clever, and occasionally a little mischievous, she brings a lively energy to the herd.

Her name means 'to increase, multiply, or spread' in Zulu, and it suits her perfectly. Andile seems to spread energy wherever she goes.

She shares a particularly close bond with Tembo and is often found close by his side. Tembo's height allows him to reach branches she can't quite manage — and luckily for Andile, he's very fond of her and often shares what he finds.

It's a partnership that works out very well for her.

Lindiwe

Female23 Years2.8m± 3 tons

Lindiwe's name means 'the girl we've been waiting for.'

And from the moment she arrived, it felt as though the name had chosen her perfectly. She already shows the calm confidence and quiet awareness of a future matriarch.

But Lindiwe also has a wonderfully expressive side.

A sudden bushbuck bark, a Hadeda's call, or the distant rumble of thunder can prompt an impressive trumpet that quickly convinces the herd something important is happening!

She's easily recognised by the distinctive 'beauty spot' on the side of her head and has a gentle way of connecting with people — and especially with Shamwari. Together they often move through the bush in quiet companionship.

Shamwari

Male30 Years3.3m± 5 tons

Shamwari was given his name before we truly knew him — but it couldn't have turned out more perfectly.

In Shona, 'Shamwari' means friend, and that is exactly what this gentle giant has become.

Calm, kind-hearted, and wonderfully easy-going, Shamwari has a way of making people feel relaxed around him. But behind that gentle nature is also a mischievous sense of humour.

It didn't take him long to discover the joy of spraying water with his trunk. And once he realised that soaking an unsuspecting person is far more entertaining than watering the ground… well, the game truly began.

If you happen to be nearby when Shamwari is in a playful mood, you may want to keep an eye on that trunk.
